Guy wrote the following about his inspiration for this painting~

"Besides the beauty of the landscapes, the lavender fields, olive groves, small villages of little stone houses and red tiled roofs perched on top of the many hills, twice a week in the square of most villages it is market day. Locals and tourists gather for shopping among little canvas covered stalls to look at and buy fresh local products in one place. You will find goat cheeses, olive oils in beautiful bottles as well as a multitude of soaps of various scents and colors. Market day is definitely a must-do when in Provence and this is the meaning of this painting. Older men and ladies wear black and it seems to me that they are the same people that I saw when I was 12 years old. When I lived in Sanary, not far from Le Castellet, inspiration for this painting came to me.
