Guy, along with his longtime partner and business representative, Lydia Carrière, planned a trip to the most important places of Guy’s youth in celebration of his 80th birthday this year. Locations included Sanary where Guy attended art school and Toulon where Guy joined the French Navy, and the beautiful island of Corsica, a very special place to him.
Guy gave to the world his whole heart in his artwork. He was authentic and had a unique and whimsical style filled with humor. He will remain with us in those artworks that deliver warmth and fond thoughts to the fortunate viewer. Guy looked on the lighter side of life and showed us how to do the same. After being told by some critics that an artist had to suffer to be successful, he replied “ I went to California and I tried to suffer, but I failed miserably.”
Guy was born in Paris, France and grew up around the family restaurant business. He demonstrated his artistic talent very early by drawing on napkins at the dining room tables. His mother took him as a teenager to Sanary in the south of France to attend a prestigious art school and at 19 he joined the Navy where he was immediately recognized as official artist of the French Navy. The Navy was instrumental in arranging art shows for Guy all around the world and when he discharged after two years of service, he found himself on the lush island of Oahu. The state of Hawaii also recognized his talent and commissioned him to paint many original artworks and murals which are still held in their collections. Guy went on to be commissioned by companies such as Aloha Airlines, Far Niente and Silver Oak wineries in the Napa Valley and the Buena Vista and House of Prime restaurants in San Francisco. Guy was inducted as a Chevalier into the Chaine des Rotisseurs and received an honorary hall of fame award from DiRoNa.
Guy loved Hawaii and settled on Maui to raise his family. He is survived by his children, Angele Buffet and Albert Buffet, currently residing in California and his sister, Michelin Counil of Nice, France. Guy’s remains will be placed on Maui in a private family ceremony at a later date.
Highlights of Guy’s career are too numerous to list and quite impressive, but perhaps his most significant achievement will continue for centuries and that is his bringing “joie de vivre “ to millions of fans and collectors now and forever who experience the art of everyone’s favorite French-American artist, Guy Buffet.
